Ekaterina Nikiporenko has created another magnificent painting that honors the actions of United States soldiers fighting in Afghanistan to destroy the forces that cowardly attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. Enduring Freedom was painted to honor the tremendous logistical effort that had to be accomplished before the combat forces could finish their work against the Taliban and Al Qaeda forces in the remote mountainous regions of some of the harshest environments in the world. Arguably the workhorse of that effort can be attributed to the dedicated crews and airframe known as the Chinook. In addition to the sterling quality of the venerable Chinook, logistical forces were faced with severe challenges in making their various means of communications operate successfully in extreme mountainous terrain. Vehicles were also stretched to the breaking point and at times it was if the forces were being supplied by men of steel and equipment of iron. At home it appeared that the USAF was doing all of the heavy lifting in the fight against the Taliban, but in reality, ground forces were absolutely needed in order to ferret out the enemy in fortified caves that ranged from massive proportions to almost glorified spider holes from a previous war in SE Asia. The challenges facing the fighting forces were only multiplied when applied to the massive logistical effort necessary to sustain the fight in such arduous conditions. We are proud of our warrior class and equally proud of our dedicated logisticians that refused to allow conditions or the environment to prevent them from completing their re-supply missions in a country that had brought another super power to its knees just some twenty years before. Simply by looking at the print one can appreciate just how much ability our fighting men and women have to project power in any theater, any climate, or any terrain.
